XiaoChen Contribution&Reflection in SMM

Hello everyone ,this is report regarding my contribution in both CA1 and CA2.I know my English is quite weak so i write these in a format.

1.WHAT?

I went to Sing NIng restaurant asked for permission regarding whether they wanted to be our target company and we helped them to do the promotion .

WHEN? (When did you do said task?)

I went to Sing Ning restaurant at 21th/4/2012

WHO? (With who or alone?)

I went to this restaurant by myself only, because it's near my living area and it's quite popular around Braddell MRT Station

HOW? (How did you go about doing it, how did you perpare before hand?)

I wanted to ask about their marketing and tried to get interested from them.I also decided to have a meal at there , so it will help me to get chance to talk about my idea and plan ,it's also will get more trust from the boss.(So-call i was the customer)

PROBLEMS? (What problems did you encounter and how did you TRIUMPH OVER THEM)

I went to Sing Ning restaurant about two times , there was a main problem during all the discussion between us .It was the boss was not in the restaurant and their attendants were not cooperated us and not interested also.Hence it directly given my plan a failure .Although, I try my best to explain my idea ,the attendant was not even wanted my contact number for her boss.Going through the discussion between us ,she felt little trust on me and always been suspicion on my purpose. Thus the idea is failed and  I had to leave.

EXPERIENCE? (What did you LEARN from your EXPERIENCE?)

I had learned that  trust was the first thing for doing business and everything will not be similar as you think ,although  you think that you have prepared enough.I also learned that how to get people attentions and interest by using my persuasive talking and talk to different people must use different way ,especially in doing business .

 IMPROVE?

I should directly talk to the person who is in-charging the business and do not waste time on wrong condition(means judge which one is more important then directly to let them know my purpose)I also should improve my communication skills and try to know what will get attention from my target audiences.

2.WHAT?

Going to HouGang MRT Station and found random potenial stores asked for permission about whether they wanted to be our target company (We had asked about 3 Chinese herb-tea stores

WHEN? (When did you do said task?)

I went to there at 27/4/2012

WHO? (With who or alone?)

I was going to there and Santhos Raj would like to give me accompany

HOW? (How did you go about doing it, how did you perpare before hand?)

Actually ,we decided to introduce ourselves and after the first experience ,I know that we must get trust from the shop owner and be sincerely. We thought that we directly to tell them our purpose and asked the permission.

PROBLEMS? (What problems did you encounter and how did you TRIUMPH OVER THEM)

Two of the stores had gotten their own marketing department .Although two of them were not doing business by using same name but they were under a same company.(Both of them were given us their business card then we suddenly realised )However ,another one herb-tea store was not belong to them but their boss was not around at that time and their attendant told me that she could not take this responsibility.

EXPERIENCE? (What did you LEARN from your EXPERIENCE?)

I had learned that doing business was not easy as I thought and could not be done depend on mass-selection , it must be done by using a completed plan and do it progressively.Although we had gotten the trust from the shops , we still need to distinguish the best and suitable one for us.

 IMPROVE?

I will do a completed plan and consider the target company seriously whether they are suitable for us and whether they will be the best choice for me and will  they get any benefits .I will also try to choose the best one for myself.(Is it valuable or not)

My Conclusion - Chng Wee Ping

It felt just like yesterday when Evan Tay, Dion Chua, Santhosh, Xiao Chen and I decide to form a team for our SMM group project; We were speculating, fantasising and visioning about what kind of company we will be helping and how will we set about assisting them, especially prestigious and large companies. We had big dreams! Hahaha, those innocent fantasies.

However, there were a lot of drawbacks if we were to help large and prestigious companies - They could already have established themselves on the internet; leaving us nothing much to improve on their social media marketing. We still managed to chance upon a respectable profession, a dentistry, who is willing to let us do social media marketing for them, but after some debate (which I could not remember clearly) among our group, we decided to cancel out the dentist clinic from our list. Up till now, I have moments where I wished we should have gone with the dentist clinic. That does not mean I regret choosing my father's company, in fact, I am very satisfied with what my group has done for my father's company.

There were hardships and setbacks along the way. Communication between each of us was rather poor during the start of the project. Not everyone have the same opinion and there were a lot of disagreements.

Despite that, I want to quote a sentence.

"You shoot me down, but I won't fall... I AM TITANIUM!" - David Guetta - Titanium ft. Sia (Song)

We persevere, put down our differences and work together as a tight group to complete the project's requirements.

The best part? Everyone gave one another compliments after a difficult task, it seems that the differences were gone.

Our group become more bonded and determined on our SMM's project, we improve and become better, as evident in our latest powerpoint presentation.

Okay... now, I want to say about what I have done for this project.

CA1
-I gave recommendation of companies that we can approach to our group members - Bakery, Eatery, Hobbies-Collection shop.
-I approached my father to seek his approval to use his company as a backup.
-I had doubts about helping about a hardware store, but gave in when other options/companies are not viable.
-I came out with the idea of placing a "like us on Facebook" sign in the company.
-I design the first sketch of our sign, but it was later improved by Evan Tay.
-Went as a group to Chang Yong Seng to analyse the company's marketing strategies.
-I did research about the company's marketing strategies - The market share, competitors, marketing management orientation and societal marketing.
-Assist Evan Tay in making our first Power Point slides.

CA2
- Went to hardware store occasionally to take pictures and do more research, sometimes with or without the company of group mates.
- I team up with Evan to analyse local hardware companies' use of Social Media Marketing. I soloed the whole research on a local hardware store - Zener D.I.Y, and compiled the information into power point slides. Evan did assist me by suggesting what kind of information we should gather.
- I too, soloed the whole power point slides for the presentation. I learnt from my mistake in CA1 for using too much text and not enough images, and create a visually better power point slides. I made sure there are not so much text and enough images to catch the attention of visual-learners; two birds with one stone.

Overall
- Remind team members about the tasks when the leader is stressed out or busy.
- I take initiative by starting the tasks first, example, this blog; Team mates then learn and improve on it.

My Conclusion - Santhosh -- Individual contribution

Individual Report-Santhosh
What I Did
-CA1
    - Visited stores in hougang with Xiao Chen (Herbal store, Thousand Deli Bakery Drink store etc.)
    - Got rejected may times, but it was worth it as we gained valuable information
    - Give my opinion that the hardware store was a better choice than the dentist.
-I did research on the marketing methods of the company for CA1 presentation.
 -CA2
    - Did all the slides for practical 3 (Overseas company) with Dion's help.

    - Gave my input on the Lowe's (Overseas company) which dion found.
    - Did the flyer for CYS hardware store.
    - Created poster for online advertisements
    - Did online advertisement of Facebook page on english forums.
    - Created twitter page.
What I Didn't Do Well
-Overall
    - Did not maintain the twitter page well.

    -  Communication was sometimes a problem as team members liked to speak in Mandarin. (I should have told them to speak English.)
    - Could have posted more blog entries.
What I think that I did well
  -Overall
-Managed my time well, especially for the practicals, which we were given little time to do.
-I communicated well with team members (when they spoke English)
    - Gave encouragement to group members who were feeling stressed, and they did the same for me.

    - Worked well with my teammates.(No arguments, etc.)

What I think I could improve on/ learn and apply them in life after doing this project
-Presentation skills that I learnt from SMM can be applied to my poly life.
-Time management skills picked up from SMM can be applied in my daily life.
-Learned to be a better team mate.

In conclusion, I feel that this project was very meaningful as it allowed me to explore the wonders of Social Media Marketing (SMM), which I did not know about before. I learned so much about the way that companies use SMM to attract customers. I was oblivious to stuff like marketing principles and stuff like that before.

Other than that, I also learnt valuable life skills like presentation skills and time management skills, that will be very useful for poly life and for my working life. I would do it all again if i had the chance, because this module was really very engaging and informative!

27/7/12 - Creation Of Slides

Last night, I stayed up to 12+ to wait for my team mates to complete their part and check through. I was planning to do the creation of the slides last night but was too exhausted. Instead, I woke up at 6 today, clocking under 6 hours of sleep. Being already exhausted, I had trouble dragging myself out of the bed. However, I endured and managed to do so.

I started working intensively on the creation of the slides and after 2 hours + of hard work, was rewarded with a rather elegant slideshow.

Learning from my previous experiences and from the remarks of the teachers, I reduced the amount of words just like the last presentation we did last week which was pretty successful. We had all done a lot better then. I realised that while the last presentation was quite good in regards to content as they were kept in point form and elaborated by the speakers, I felt that more interesting images could be added.

As such, this time round I added a lot of images to the slideshow, complementing Wee Ping's images in his part of the slides. I felt that while some of the more interesting images are irrelevant, it is still vital that I add them so that the audience would not be bored and continue to stay engaged, waiting eagerly for the next slide   in anticipation of another interesting image.

I had split the content section up amongst the team and was duly surprised by the amount of effort put in by the entire team despite having to submit our DBMS (Database Management System) projects today which includes exhaustive work.

However, one problem I encountered was that Xiao Chen's and Santhosh's word documents were too long and I had a hard time summarising them up. I am already very exhausted and hence it took longer than usual. While Dion also did in a word document, he had summarised them in point forms which made my job easier.

Wee Ping was the only one that submitted in slides and really made my job a breeze.

Overall, I am very delighted by my team's effort as they all put in a lot of effort. Even though I had a very hard time summarising Xiao Chen's and Santhosh's word documents, I am very happy that they put in so much effort to produce so much content for me to pick out the important points from.

My Conclusion - Evan Tay

Introduction

With the end of this SMM project in sight, I am met with mixed feelings. Even though I am thoroughly exhausted and relieved that it is all drawing to an end, I would say that I really appreciate this opportunity to grow.

"Tough times don't last, tough men do."

I appreciate this experience a lot because if not for it, I would not have learned so many life lessons and grown more mature. Whilst I have felt like giving up and really could not handle the workload at times, in a heart beat, I would still not refuse to be the group's leader. For it is through this leadership role that I have learned to be responsible for not only myself, but for others.

It is this responsibility for others that has made me a better person, one capable of caring for others. In my
secondary school (Catholic High School), I seldom did any group projects, lest be a leader for any of them. As such when my group members asked me to be the team's leader, I was quite hesitant.

I was afraid of the unknown.

However, in the end I decided to take on the responsibility of leading this team as my group members really wanted me to be the leader, and also because I knew that...

If I keep running from challenges and obstacles, I will never, ever, grow up and become a responsible and mature adult.

Furthermore, I have many aSPirations (Haha :P) such as leading an Independent Game Development Studio, a bookstore chain, a restaurant chain and many other businesses. Should I not grab this golden (albeit scary :O) opportunity now, who knows when the next one would come along.

Before I continue on (my grandmother's story :D), I would like to share how the team came together.

Forming Of Team

Being a scholar, I have to score A or B+ for every subject, preferrably A or else I would be in a huge risk of not being able to fulfil my scholarship bond which requires me to study an IT-related course in a local university.

As such, my biggest worry ahead of starting my 1st year in SP was the group projects. This is because while I could ensure my good grades by working hard in examinations and in solo projects, I could not ensure that I could score well in a group project even if I work very hard.

Due to this worry, the moment I heard about the SMM project, I began to start searching for prospective group members as I wanted to ensure that everyone in the team would be dedicated and willing to work hard.

The first team member I asked to form a team with me would be Wee Ping. I knew him since Primary 5 (Catholic High Primary Sch) throughout Secondary (Both Catholic High Secondary Sch). Not only is he a very close friend, he is also very responsible towards other. Furthermore, due to us knowing each other for long, we would not misunderstand each other. (Besides, who would not want to form a team with his close friend! :D).

The second team member I asked to form a team with me would be Santhoshraj. I had already gotten to know him well before other classmates as we are fellow scholars. He is very friendly and easy to get along with (smiles like an idiot all the time :P). Furthermore, he had the same obligations with me and had to score good grades too. As such, I was certain he would work hard too.

The third team member I asked to join the team (now consisting of 3 person) would be Dion. We had talked quite a bit and I found him to be a really nice and friendly classmate. I was confident that we would get along well. He also seemed to be the kind who would be responsible and do his part.

The final team member was Xiao Chen. Santhosh (or is it Dion :O) had talked to him and asked if he could join our team. I agreed as he seemed okay too.

Team Leader Selection

After we sat down together for the first time, I asked who wanted to be the leader of the group. No one volunteered and Santhosh asked me to be. I was hesitant and decided to settle it Primary School Style. I asked each of them to pick a number and I added them up and started to count us in clockwise direction.

I had thought that it was very unlikely to be me and hence did not cheat (Hehe :P). Unfortunately, I was fated to be the leader of the team (much to the laughter of my other team members).

I <3 Santhoshraj, Wee Ping, Dion, Xiao Chen, Santhoshraj

At this point in time where we would soon part and no longer meet up (and hear Santhosh hurl abuses at Xiao Chen and vice vera :P), I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT I AM REALLY GLAD THAT MY TEAM MATES TURNED OUT TO BE AS EXPECTED, A-W-E-S-O-M-E. AWESOME!

Even though we had several misunderstandings in the second term, we managed to talk it out amicably and settle it by the end of the day. I am really glad that we are all mature enough to put aside our ego and pride and just have heart-to-heart talks with each other that enabled us to carry on being the GREAT ASIA TEAM WHICH WE ARE!

As I had never been a leader before, that had been one too many times where I fell short of my leadership roles. My team members were all very understanding and in fact consoled me and told me to take it as a learning experience and 没关系。

I really appreciate them for being such good friends and cooperative team mates! :D

April - First Month of SMM Project

Our first task at hand was to find a prospective company to do Social Media Marketing for. Even though it was individual work and we only needed to find our own company. We went with each other if we were free too. Even though Dion found his prospective company already, he accompanied me to Orchard Dental Surgery! :DD I was really grateful for he had not needed to trouble himself by going to Orchard with me (He lives at Bedok! :O).

Summary: On the 26th of April, I headed down to the Orchard Dental Surgery clinc with Dion. Xiao Chen and Santhosh was not with us as they were busy visiting another companies Wee Ping had a follow-up dental appointment for his wisdom-tooth surgery and hence could not accompany us. We reached at 5, and left at 6+. We engaged the two doctors there in a casual yet professional tone. We gave them a brief summary and was given the green lights within 5 minutes of discussion. We finished discussing everything in an hour because we were able to be very direct and straight-to-the-point with them.

However, in the end, after much discussion (http://1a06smm.blogspot.sg/2012/05/352012-i-requested-for-letter-or-email.html), we decided to choose Chang Yong Seng Hardware & Tool Enterprise. Hence I sent this apology letter (http://1a06smm.blogspot.sg/2012/05/orchard-dental-surgery-clinic-apology.html) to the Clinic.

May - Preparations for Social Media Marketing for Chang Yong Seng Enterprise

In this month, after settling on a company, we started to become more focused and no longer felt like "lost sheeps". It was during this month where we had the greatest amount of fun (at least for me) planning ahead what to do. We really enjoyed sharing ideas with each other as we were all very supportive of each other speaking up! I felt really at ease and could be totally open with my team members.

On the side-note: I would like to note that upon reflection, I realised that all my team mates are like me: Very open, understanding and direct. I would say that it is a very good thing as because of this, we never held any grudges against each other and could talk it out with each other the moment we felt unhappy about something.

We visited Chang Yong Seng Enterprise together as a whole group on the 10th of May (Not blogged, but Photo in Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=3942647618484&set=o.293531757392493&type=1&theater) for the first time. We did so because we had to do research for a Practical 2 question:

June - Action Plan & Visit To Chang Yong Seng Again! (Dion & I)

I fell short seriously for the first time. I had thought that the Action Plan was just a short and rough guideline to what we would be doing. Instead, I learned that it was suppose to be a fully detailed plan and that all the steps had to be listed out. I felt devastated. To make it worse, the first presentation we did prior to the holidays was sort of a failure as everyone ended up not doing their part. It was my fault, and I felt terrible. I was really disappointed with myself because when I step up as leader of this team,

I wanted to be responsible for others, and make a difference for them.

Instead, I failed them and caused them to be unable to reach their fullest potential. I had thought that it was alright to present sections not done by you, as it did not really affect me. But what I had not considered :( was that others had different opinions, and could be affected even if I would not be. It was here when I learned my first, and most important lesson:

Don't be narrow-minded, put yourself in others' shoes and never, ever make decisions based solely on your point of view.
Feeling really devastated, I decided that I had to make a change. However, first I would take a break.

Summary: Then on Tuesday, 12th of June, we met up to discuss further on how to improve our Action Plan. We had already discussed and worked online together, and this meeting served to concluded whatever we had already done throughout the holidays.
FULL BLOG POST: (http://1a06smm.blogspot.sg/2012/06/discussion-on-action-plan.html)

Summary: Later on June 18, Monday, Dion and I headed down to Chang Yong Seng Hardware & Tools Enterprise around 2pm to discuss with Mr Chng, the boss, to seek permission for creating a website for him. We wanted to create a website for him so as to provide basic information to both potential and current customers. Mr and Mrs Chng were very keen to have us create a website for them. We then proceeded to take down basic information for the website and left around 3.30pm. Not wanting to disturb the boss further, we headed to somewhere else to discuss.

We also set up our Facebook page this month and I felt the initial Profile Picture and Cover Photo unsightly, hence I talked to Wee Ping about changing them to pictures of the store as they were more appealing. He agreed and we did so (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=145105638959329&set=a.144054002397826.30951.141569422646284&type=3&theater)

July - Continuation of SMM Project -- Maintainence of Campaign

Xiao Chen, on his own initiative (I did not ask him to do it, he did it on his own! :D), designed a logo for Chang Yong Seng. He shared it with us and we all felt that while it was good, improvements could be made to improve it.

As such, I gave feedback to Xiao Chen and asked if he could make changes. Unfortunately, he could no longer find the .PSD (Photoshop) file. As a result, I decided to re-do a new design that was based on his. I did not ask him as he was already very tired.

After spending about 45 minutes in Photoshop, I finally managed to replicate his design and improve upon it.

WEBSITE CREATION!

On Wednesday, the 11th of this month, I completed coding the website for Chang Yong Seng Hardware & Tools Enterprise. We were very enthusiastic to create a website for the company because we wanted to create an online presence for the company. We felt that it was important to do so as due to constraints in the Facebook and Twitter pages, we are unable to provide all the necessary information on the company.

Initially, it was planned that Dion would take charge of the layout of the website and create a few pages while I would add in content and create the other 75% of the pages based on the layout designed by him. However, we felt that the layout was slightly disorganized and could be further improved on.

Hence, I re-coded from scratch loosely based on his design. After showing the website to my team mates, they felt that the initial logo looked fuzzy and was of funky colours.  After getting the thumbs up from the rest of my team, I decided that the website was finally done.

Overall, I am very delighted by my team's effort as they all put in a lot of effort. Even though I had a very hard time summarising Xiao Chen's and Santhosh's word documents, I am very happy that they put in so much effort to produce so much content for me to pick out the important points from.

My Conclusion - Dion Chua -- Personal report *edited*

Individual Report-Dion
*Edit* To my teammates, I'm really appreciative that everyone putted up with me with my nonsence. This group had really allow me to know more about myself and how this fundamentally flawed character of mine will not get me anywhere in life but i'm really grateful and thankful for this whole experience.

What I Did
-CA1
-Visited the dentist with Evan for the "visiting of companies".
-Visited the store "Ah Gong Pork Stall" which the boss eventually accepted but after considerations, the
team chose to do the hardware store "Chang Yong Seng Hardware & Tools Pte Ltd".
-Shared my opinion on the actual decision of the dentist store which eventually lead to the decision of
      choosing the hardware store.
-I did the research on the history, goals and aims of the company.
 -CA2
    - Found various overseas Facebook pages to start with.
-Gave my input on the Lowe's and another Facebook page which we ended up doing Lowe's.
-Assisted Santhosh in the completion of the powerpoint slides on the overseas Facebook page.
-Did the layout for the webpage(included a google map, Facebook and Twitter widget) and written a
story of the rise of "Chang Yong Seng Hardware Pte Ltd". However, the layout was eventually rejected
by the group and Evan redesigned the website and used the same texts.
-Assisted Xiao Chen in the cropping of images for the products.
-Posted motivational videos on the Facebook page.

What I Didn't Do Well
-Overall
    -Lack of communication skills.
-Felt that I'm too close minded.
    -Conflicts between members.
-Gave too much opinion which sometimes might be a waste of time.
-Wasn't much of a good teammate due to pride(maybe).
    -Insensitive
-Wasn't on the right pace most of the time.

What I think that I did well
  -Overall
-Allocated my time efficiently, allowing lesser workload and more productivity.
-Tried to help my teammates as much as possible.
-Put the group before my individual projects and study time.
-Gave opinions to continue the discussion.
-Tried to write interesting blog posts by implementing stories.

What I think I could improve on/ learn and apply them in life after doing this project
-Try to be be a better teammate.
-Try to be more considerate for others.
-Shouldn't do things at my own pace, be it too fast or too slow.
    -
